Breakfast: Your Best Fuel for School
The first meal of the morning is a critical time to refuel the body. That’s true for everyone—but even more important for children headed to school. Research shows that kids who regularly eat breakfast concentrate better, have more energy, and even handle frustration better.
If you’re looking for tips to get the day started right, a registered dietitian offers insights, ideas, and inspiration.
Getting a Jumpstart
“We are literally breaking our fast from sleeping overnight,” says Lauren Crain, Registered Dietitian (pictured). What we eat for breakfast is really important. A balanced meal with carbs, healthy fat, and protein can give your child a boost in energy and clarity to jumpstart their day.”
Quick Convenience Is Key
Pressed for time in the morning? You’re far from alone! Healthy prepackaged items like yogurt, cottage cheese, whole grain cereal bars, and frozen breakfast tacos or waffles might become your best friends. Meal prepping the night before is another great idea. Make overnight oats or breakfast “go” boxes with simple items like a banana or dried fruit, nuts, and seeds.
Don’t Beat Yourself Up!
Not every family has time to eat a home-cooked breakfast around the table. “Sometimes it’s just a struggle to get kids to school,” says Lauren. “It’s fine to eat in the car or have breakfast at school.” Most school districts offer balanced breakfasts—some even offer “second-chance” breakfasts—to make sure students get the healthy start they need.
Note: Since everyone’s health history and nutritional needs are so different, please make sure that you talk with your doctor and a registered dietitian to get advice about the diet and exercise plan that‘s right for you.
