School’s IN for Young Chefs!
Are you gearing up for kid-friendly activities? Here’s one idea: Get kids in the kitchen. Research shows children tend to eat more of a food they’ve made themselves—and that includes foods made with veggies, fruits, and other healthy foods. Also: Cooking with kids can be fun! Read on for expert tips on getting kids in the kitchen.
Teaching Moments
“Cooking is essential,” says Chef Tess Collins (pictured). “It’s a great way to teach kids about science, art, and math. It helps them understand the importance of what we’re putting into our bodies every day. And cooking is a great skill for kids to have for the rest of their lives.”
How Early Should You Start?
Start as soon as your child can safely hold a kitchen utensil! Even kids as young as two may be able to do some simple tasks in the kitchen, such as stir cookie batter with assistance or add ingredients measured by mom or dad. For preschoolers and older, tasks like measuring, pouring, and mixing can be great introductions to cooking.
Fun Dishes to Get Started
Making pizza together from scratch is always a big hit. Bonus points for using fresh tomatoes and herbs you and the kids have grown! You don’t even have to use the oven or stove. Try making lemonade, hummus, smoothies, or ice cream.
Note: Since everyone’s health history and nutritional needs are so different, please make sure that you talk with your doctor and a registered dietitian to get advice about the diet and exercise plan that‘s right for you.
