Your New Chapter Starts Now
Are you earning a new degree, working toward a promotion, training for a marathon, or learning how to play an instrument? Whatever you’re trying to accomplish, here are some expert strategies for tackling big new challenges, to sustain your energy and motivation, and to keep your eyes on the prize!
First, Be Committed!
There is a clear difference between something you’d like to do and something you want to do. “When you are committed to something, you’re unstoppable,” says Yarvell Gardner, a licensed professional counselor (pictured). Small steps are easier to attain than big leaps and each small win will motivate you to keep going!
Mistakes Happen—Embrace Them
No one likes to fail. The key is to learn from a slip-up, so it doesn’t ruin your entire endeavor. “You must have a short memory for perceived failures and hope for the next opportunity,” Yarvell says. “Think of failure as a steppingstone to move forward in life, and then it becomes less scary.”

Rally Your People
Have you heard about accountability partners? These are the people who can share in your goal and help you reach it. You may need to look beyond your inner circle of family and friends. “Find the people who will support you and that you can talk to when things get rough. That’s exactly why support groups exist,” Yarvell says.
Note: Since everyone’s health history and nutritional needs are so different, please make sure that you talk with your doctor and a registered dietitian to get advice about the diet and exercise plan that‘s right for you.
