Summertime Surprise
When it comes to kids and summer break, we picture kids being more active. However, surprisingly the opposite can be true! Studies confirm most kids are actually less active during the summer than the school year. Here are some tips to keep them active, happy, and healthy.
Keep Moving
Children need at least an hour of physical activity each day—and that doesn’t change when school’s out! Find ways to help young ones stay active. Plan outings or vacations that promote physical activity, not just R&R. Go hiking or cycling in a local, state, or national park. Dust off the bike and skates. Look for an organized sports camp or activity program—or get a pass to the local pool.
Take a Bite Out of the Season
Make summer produce the centerpiece of your meals and snacks. Visit a farmers’ market or a pick-your-own farm with kids and plan meals together using fresh ingredients. Have a backyard vegetable and herb garden? Get the kids involved! And remember to stock up on healthy snacks to keep the fun going between meals.
Routines Rule
As much as possible in the summer, maintain the healthy routines kids keep through the year. Stick with regular times for meals and snacks, and make sure your kids get enough sleep. And remember screen time is idle time. Experts recommend limiting it to no more than 1 or 2 hours a day.
Note: Since everyone’s health history and nutritional needs are so different, please make sure that you talk with your doctor and a registered dietitian to get advice about the diet and exercise plan that‘s right for you.
